Emerging out of my waking dreams, my artwork pulls from my unconscious, my imagination. I’m creating while awake, but dreaming. The vivid inner life pulls imaginings from the edge of my periphery for my hand to transform into tangible images that try to make sense of it all, this life, this moment, this memory. I’m the current me with years and years of experiences to draw inspiration from, and yet am still that very young self spending hours in solitude in the forest surrounding my childhood home. I credit my imagination, love of the natural world, and vivid inner life with those early, formative years. 

 

There can be magic in the mundane, an opportunity to discover what there might be that is just under the surface, what might be unseen or unspoken. The genre of magical realism has been a great influence in my work. My starting point is always a detailed drawing to guide me. I allow for my work to evolve during my process, and am always reaching toward an impactful, emotional punch bringing the inner life onto the canvas or paper. The imagery I work with is rendered in a reality gone slightly askew.
